Key Elements of a Nonprofit Fundraising Video

You do life-changing work, but even the most powerful missions need a compelling story.

At Storyboard Films, we help nonprofits inspire action through impactful storytelling. We know how hard it is to distill your impact into just a few minutes of video. That’s why we bring years of experience and a thoughtful approach to every project—making sure your message truly connects.

This spring, we partnered with six Twin Cities nonprofits, who will raise nearly $3 million for vital programs. Our videos are tools to rally communities and secure the financial support nonprofits need to thrive.

We’re proud to have contributed to the success of these local organizations: Family Means, Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, Inner City Tennis, Summit Academy OIC, St. Vincent De Paul Catholic School, Alzheimer’s Association of Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter, and Hammer NER.

Key Elements of a Strong Nonprofit Fundraising Video

1. Inspire, Don't Just Inform
Your audience should feel compelled to take action. Prioritize authentic, personal stories over statistics or scripted messaging. Real stories and candid conversations reveal the heart behind your cause, sparking emotional engagement and a desire to support your mission.

2. Choose A Great Story
Be mindful of what story and who you pick as you want an authentic person who is willing to share their experiences. The person should demonstrate resilience and the ability to transform difficult situations into something positive - a story with emotion that will captivate your audience and donors.

3. Focus on One Compelling Narrative
Dedicate time and care to crafting a single, cohesive story that positions the nonprofit as a trusted guide supporting the individual’s journey. Ensure the narrative reflects the broader mission of the organization.

4. Balance Voice and Visuals
Keep the featured individual at the center of the story, while including voices from your nonprofit who are in supportive roles. Complement the narrative with visuals—personal photos, video footage, and imagery from your nonprofit space—that enrich the viewer’s connection to the story.

5. Celebrate Achievement's with Integrity
Allow the individual to tell their story in their own words. Avoid steering the narrative to fit an agenda or placing words in their mouth. Approach the interview process with sensitivity and care to ensure it honors their resilience and celebrates their achievements authentically.
